Web 8080: A Brief History
Web 8080 was founded on 1988 by Ken Empie, Building and troubleshooting networks and consulting for AutoCAD, DOS and Novell. Ken co-designed software for assets disposition in the late '80s during the banking crisis. He founded the RTC Store in 1990 to help liquidate assets to offset the losses while providing a benefit to needy businesses.
In 1992, Ken worked for cable engineering firms acclimatizing them to hardware and CADD by writing routines to automate drafting for cable and utility builds, city substructure maps and other cartographical applications. Ken consulted later for Geonex Worldwide, the largest cartography company in the world at that time. He was responsible for designing and integration of routines that would fully automate the 3rd shift using custom CADD routines, batch systems network automation.
In 1995, Ken created "Beyond Bit & Bytes", a local access comedy cable television
show that showcased software and helped people "Learn By Laughing".
Through the 90’s, Ken designed commercial and specialty software for small businesses in Los Angeles. In 1994, when the internet was in it’s public infancy, ken started a second tier domain registry and hosting company.
Later, Ken joined ResolveNet, heading the India division, designing and building the first CAC (Computer Assisted Classification) system, a proponent of the UN-SPSC. In 2000 Ken spoke at the World Leadership Conference to include members of the United Nations, Governments and heads of fortune 1000 companies.
After the "dot-com" bubble burst in 2001, Ken was appointed Secretary or CRTA (the Code Resolution Translation Authority) where he co-authored the UCIC, (Universal Commodity Identifier Code), intended to create the highest concordance (up to 100% reciprocity) of the world's top 124 international commodity codes.
Ken went freelance and has built over 400 web sites and 71 legacy applications. He now owns DOT 8080, an internet domain registry, and HOST 8080 a complete hosting solution. He manages both personally.
Ken was a contributor / technical consultant on many internet related technical books to include some Apache and DOS series books and is published in India based on his work on the CAC and other loose coupling, translation systems.
